Vibe-Coded Websites

AI is rapidly changing how websites are created, enabling non-technical builders to create projects that previously required the expertise of an experienced developer or a marketing agency. However, this new approach introduces risks for both the University and those managing the website. For a vibe-coded website to be published to Notre Dame’s network using an nd.edu subdomain, the following standards are required.

If you have questions before or during your project, please contact webhelp@nd.edu.

University website requirements apply.

Vibe-coded websites have the same requirements as every website published on the University network, including:

  • Hosting
  • Performance
  • Accessibility
  • Branding and design using the ND Web Theme.
  • Responsiveness

Please review the web brand standards in detail before beginning your project. If your team does not have the technical acumen to meet these requirements, consider partnering with a marketing agency.

Management and Governance

Vibe-coded websites often lack the management tools typically associated with campus websites, specifically: 1) a content management system, and 2) staff with the technical skills to support updates and modifications. With this in mind, University Communications requires the following:

  1. A management plan explaining how technical modifications will be made and how content admins will update content.
  2. Documentation and instructions for future staffers. If the person who built the website leaves the University, is it clear how updates, modifications, and troubleshooting are accomplished?
  3. Approval from departmental leadership regarding the two items above.

Ultimately, the responsibility for the website lies with the individuals who built and manage it, not the AI engine that assisted. For more information about how the University thinks about this responsibility, please see OIT’s documentation about ownership & responsibilities related to AI-assisted coding. University Communications has the right to unpublish any website that poses a security risk or public relations concern.

Quality Assurance

Before University Communications can approve a new subdomain, the related website is reviewed to ensure standards are met. Standards are specific, and vibe-coded websites occasionally require multiple revision cycles. This QA process usually takes a week or more, so project managers should plan accordingly.
